Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
