American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official told a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 American flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," he remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I secure another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be held up due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest since the closure began.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in history.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official said.

On that day, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The FAA notice went out at 08:45 local time on the weekend. Numerous trips were back on schedule before noon.

Flights at Newark Airport, however, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airport in the US, could encounter difficulties from low staffing later in the day.

The FAA advised passengers in California to consult carriers about updated departure times.

The issue precedes Game 3 of the championship, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak times to travel by air in the US.

Pressure on American aviation contributed to ending a federal closure in 2019. Back then, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to stay home on the same day on January 25, 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his first term as president, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
