Alleged Stalker Questioned: 'But What If I Might Be Madeleine?'
A female indicted with harassing Kate McCann apparently left her a recorded message which asked: "what if I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, twenty-four, who court testimony revealed has consistently claimed she was the missing Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are facing charges accused with pursuing Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February the current year.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court heard communication data and data recovered from phones documented Ms Wandelt repeatedly requesting Madeleine's mother for a DNA test throughout that period.
Madeleine's vanishing in 2007 - when she was three years old during a family holiday in Portugal - is among the most publicized child disappearance cases and continues to be unsolved.
'I Don't Want Money'
One recorded message, presented in court, captured Ms Wandelt stating: "I realize I'm overweight and unattractive like Madeleine had been, but I believe what I believe."
While a separate message of Ms Wandelt's one-way conversations with Mrs McCann's recording stated: "Imagine there is a small chance that I'm her? What happens next? Isn't that significant for you?"
"I am not seeking money, I maintain a existence here in Poland, I just want to know," she added.
The tribunal was told that via electronic messages, SMS messages and calls, Ms Wandelt asked for a DNA test, forwarded youth pictures to her phone in a effort to display a similarity to Mrs McCann's disappeared daughter, and claimed to have "recollections" from a youth with the McCanns.
Robert Jones, an intelligence analyst with the police force who compiled the evidence, informed the court there "didn't appear to be any responses" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt also contacted acquaintances of the McCanns, as per the phone records.
On that date, the father picked up a call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, saying she had "incorrect contact information."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt deposited a voicemail on Mrs McCann's recording declaring "I will persist and I intend to demonstrate my claim."
The court heard the co-defendant developed a connection through digital means with Ms Wandelt before accompanying her on a visit to the McCanns' property in the county in December 2024.
Communication data showed Mrs Spragg had reached out through communication app to Mrs McCann to state the news outlets had characterized Ms Wandelt as "emotionally disturbed" but that she ought to be treated respectfully in the time leading up to the appearance to the village, that area, in that winter.
The court heard communications between the two individuals, in that autumn, considering trying to obtain Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her trash or from cutlery at a restaurant.
"We need to take action," the co-defendant advised Ms Wandelt.
On the evening of the visit to their home, the defendant sent a text which said: "We are positioned adjacent to the McCanns' residence with our vehicle dark like investigators. I wanted to accomplish this with Peter Andrew I hadn't anticipated I would be engaged in this with the McCanns."
The case continues.
