Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Triggered the Controversy
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly served in defense or defense capacities.
"As we did, you all swore an oath to safeguard and support this founding document," the representatives affirmed in the short video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can refuse unlawful commands, you have to refuse unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction
The recorded statement seemed to trigger a furious reaction from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump published on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their comments cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Respond
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader released a combined declaration censuring the remarks.
"Violent politics has no place in the United States," they wrote. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our nation with great national pride and excellence. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and call on GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the protection of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme online messages and recant his aggressive language before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Officials' Strong Answer
The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a statement.
"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who love this country and swore an pledge to safeguard and uphold the constitution of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental obligation."
"The significant point is that the ex-president deems it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the constitution and obligation to obey only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "The entire nation must come together and censure the president's demands for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Partisan Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of elected officials."
He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and unconditionally."
The Conservative official supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This constitutes very harmful, you have prominent officials of Congress telling troops to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to examine the language and determine all that."
White House Response
During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Would the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson declared. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a video message to individuals of the US military, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the president's lawful orders."
She said: "The sanctity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
