Investigation Shows More Than Four-Fifths of Herbal Remedy Publications on Amazon Probably Produced by AI
A comprehensive study has revealed that AI-generated text has infiltrated the herbalism book section on the online marketplace, including products promoting memory-enhancing gingko extracts, fennel "tummy-soothing syrups", and "citrus-immune gummies".
Alarming Findings from Content Analysis Investigation
Per analyzing numerous titles made available in the marketplace's herbal remedies subcategory between January and September of 2024, analysts determined that over four-fifths appeared to be written by AI.
"This is a troubling disclosure of the extensive reach of unidentified, unverified, unsupervised, potentially AI content that has completely invaded Amazon's ecosystem," stated the investigation's primary author.
Professional Worries About Automatically Created Wellness Advice
"There exists a substantial volume of herbal research available currently that's completely worthless," commented a medical herbalist. "AI will not understand the method of separating through the poor-quality content, all the nonsense, that's of absolutely no consequence. It might direct users incorrectly."
Illustration: Bestselling Title Being Questioned
An example of the apparently AI-generated publications, Natural Healing Handbook, currently holds the No 1 bestseller in the marketplace's dermatology, essential oil treatments and natural medicines subcategories. The book's opening promotes the volume as "a guide for personal confidence", urging readers to "look inward" for remedies.
Questionable Writer Background
The creator is identified as an unverified writer, containing a marketplace listing presents her as a "thirty-five year old natural medicine practitioner from the seaside community of Byron Bay" and founder of the company a herbal product line. Nevertheless, none of the writer, the enterprise, or connected parties appear to have any digital footprint beyond the marketplace profile for the book.
Detecting Automatically Created Text
Analysis noted multiple indicators that suggest potential automatically created natural medicine content, featuring:
- Liberal utilization of the nature icon
- Plant-related writer identities like Rose, Nature words, and Clove
- Citations to controversial herbalists who have endorsed unverified treatments for major illnesses
Wider Phenomenon of Unchecked AI Content
These publications constitute a larger trend of unchecked automated text available for purchase on Amazon. Last year, wild mushroom collectors were warned to bypass foraging books marketed on the site, seemingly authored by automated programs and including unreliable advice on identifying lethal fungi from consumable ones.
Requests for Oversight and Marking
Publishing representatives have urged the platform to begin labeling AI-generated text. "Each title that is fully AI-generated must be labeled as AI-generated and automated garbage must be removed as a matter of urgency."
Reacting, the company commented: "We maintain publication standards governing which books can be displayed for acquisition, and we have preventive and responsive methods that assist in identifying material that violates our standards, regardless of whether automatically produced or not. We dedicate significant manpower and funds to guarantee our standards are adhered to, and eliminate books that fail to comply to those requirements."
