No less than 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's records.

Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of AlemĂŁo and Penha, local authorities reported. In excess of 80 suspects were detained.

Fierce clashes commenced when approximately 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with shooting, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

The area of favelas adjacent to Rio's airport is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
