The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
