The English golfer Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.

Rai sank a crucial birdie from around eight foot to seal the win, repeating his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff win over the same opponent.

Rai started the final round with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.

Play-Off Decider

That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more person. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Performances

The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to make up, coming up a stroke behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
