The Former President's Ukraine Peace Initiative Represents a Benefit to Russia's Leader

Initially, Trump seemed to take a firm approach on Ukraine. After issuing warnings of "significant ramifications" last August if Russia's president continued hindering ceasefire talks, he finally introduced substantial penalties on the Russian two largest energy firms, Lukoil and Rosneft. This action seriously impacted the Russian leader's capability to finance his aggression in Ukraine.

However, through his recently unveiled comprehensive peace proposal for the conflict, that was developed by both nations' diplomats without Ukraine's or EU participation, he has clearly gone back to his Russia-friendly approach.

Favoring Military Action

Trump's initiative would in practice reward Putin for occupying Ukraine while leaving Ukraine's democracy in danger. Although bold declarations that "The nation's autonomy will be upheld", large portions of the initiative effectively weaken that very independence. This constitutes a Russian ideal would certainly be a disaster for Ukraine.

Showing his corporate past, Trump persists to consider the situation in Ukraine as a mere border issue, like handing Putin a portion of Ukrainian territory will satisfy the president. But, Putin's military campaign is not simply about dominating a damaged area of industrial-devastated territory in eastern Ukraine. It is about Ukraine's political system – and Putin's clear intention to eliminate it so it ceases to acts as an attractive standard for the Russian citizens of the accountable governance that Putin's deepening authoritarian rule denies them.

Territorial Concessions

Although freezing in position the currently split regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, the plan would force the nation to give up all of Donetsk province. Aside from rewarding Russia with area that its military have been failed to capture in more than a ten years of warfare, this giveaway would leave Ukrainian military defenses severely weakened.

Donetsk is the location of Ukraine's well-known "fortress belt", the well-established military defenses that are a critical obstacle to enemy progress. The proposal would have the Ukrainian military leave these fortifications, leaving Russian forces a unobstructed route to the capital in case he subsequently choose to resume the hostilities.

Military Restrictions

Additionally, in a step that would enable additional fighting more feasible for Russia, Trump would mandate the nation to reduce the scale of its troops from their present large number troops to a limit of this lower number. Importantly, the plan imposes no equivalent restrictions on Russia's military.

Apparently as a gesture to Putin's campaign to depict Ukraine's chosen by the people government as extremists, Trump's proposal asserts: "All radical doctrine and practices must be rejected and forbidden." Seemingly to highlight this element, it demands that "Ukraine will hold political contests in 100 days" of a truce. Meanwhile, Trump sets no condition that Putin risk his authoritarian rule by conducting democratic processes in Russia.

Protection Commitments

Admittedly, the proposal has the Russian Federation pledge not to "invade bordering nations" and to "establish in law its position of non-aggression towards the EU and Ukraine". However given that Putin has breached similar treaties in the previous instances – for example the Budapest accord, in which Russia pledged to honor Ukraine's territorial integrity in exchange for relinquishing its former Soviet nuclear weapons, and the previous peace deals, in which Moscow agreed to a truce and a restoration of occupied land in the Donbas to Ukrainian control – for what reason should the international community have confidence in this commitment this time?

That is why the Ukrainian government has been so adamant on external protection assurances. Although the plan promises a "decisive coordinated defense action" in case the Russian Federation resume its military campaign, and states that "The nation will receive strong security guarantees", the details include unclear to troubling. The initiative would not only deny the nation alliance membership but also prevent alliance nations from stationing military personnel on the nation's land, thus blocking the reassurance force, likely led by European powers, on which the Ukrainian government had been depending to prevent Putin from rebuilding his diminished forces, rearming, and resuming aggression.

Global Response

Another side agreement reportedly would grant the nation with a Nato-style protection assurance, in which any subsequent "serious, deliberate, and sustained aggression" by the Russian Federation on Ukraine "shall be regarded as an attack endangering the stability and safety of the transatlantic community." That suggests a defense action. But in contrast to a strong Ukraine's armed forces – the nation's primary deterrent against additional hostilities – the credibility of the side agreement would hinge on the dedication of alliance members, such as the US administration, to act militarily to Russia's hostilities, an action they have {not
