The Heartbreaking Transformation Just One Year Has Made in the US

One year ago, the situation was utterly different. Ahead of the national election, considerate residents could acknowledge the country's serious imperfections – its injustices and inequality – however they still could see it as America. A free society. A land where legal governance held significance. A nation guided by a honorable and ethical official, notwithstanding his older age and increasing frailty.

Nowadays, in late October 2025, many of us scarcely know the land we inhabit. Individuals believed to be unauthorized foreigners are detained and forced into vans, occasionally refused legal rights. The eastern section of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed for an obscene event space. The leader is harassing his political rivals or perceived antagonists and insisting federal prosecutors transfer an enormous amount of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are deployed into American cities on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has effectively freed itself of regular press examination as it spends what could amount to nearly $1tn in public funds. Universities, legal practices, news companies are buckling due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are regarded as members of the royal family.

“The United States, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the edge into authoritarianism and fascism,” Garrett Graff, wrote in August. “Ultimately, swifter than I thought feasible, it occurred in America.”

One awakes with fresh terrors. And it is challenging to understand – and painful to realize – how deeply lost we are, and how quickly it has happened.

Yet, it is known that the president was properly voted in. Even after his profoundly alarming initial presidency and following the alerts linked to the awareness of the conservative plan – despite the leader directly stated openly he would rule as a tyrant only on the first day – sufficient voters elected him rather than Kamala Harris.

While alarming as the present situation are, it's more frightening to recognize that we’re only three-quarters of a year into this administration. What will another 36 months of this downfall position us? And suppose that timeframe becomes a more extended duration, since there is no one to restrain this leader from determining that another term is necessary, maybe for national security reasons?

Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. There are congressional elections in 2026 which might create a new balance of power, should Democrats recapture the Senate or House of parliament. We have elected officials who are trying to apply a degree of oversight, like Democratic congressmen that are starting a probe into the attempted fund seizure by federal prosecutors.

And a presidential election three years from now could begin our journey to recovery just as the previous vote set us on this regrettable path.

There exist millions of Americans demonstrating in public spaces of their cities, similar to recent in the past days at democracy demonstrations.

A former official, commented this week that “the slumbering force of the US is awakening”, just as it did after the Communist witch-hunt era during the fifties or amid the Vietnam war protests or during the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.

The author states he knows the indicators of that awakening and notices it unfolding currently. For proof, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the broad, multi-faction opposition against a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to sign military mandates they solely cover authorized information.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists asleep until certain corruption turns extremely harmful, an specific act so offensive of societal benefit, specific cruelty so noisy, that he has no choice but to awaken.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I respect the author's seasoned opinion. Perhaps he will turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries persist: will the nation regain its footing? Can it retrieve its status globally and its devotion to legal principles?

Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My negative thoughts indicates that the latter is accurate; that all may indeed be lost. My optimistic spirit, nevertheless, tells me that we need to strive, by any means we can.

For me, working in journalism analysis, that means encouraging reporters to adhere, more thoroughly, to their duty of scrutinizing authority. For others, it could mean engaging with political races, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to protect ballot privileges.

Less than a year ago, we existed in a very different place. A year from now? Or after another term? The truth is, we cannot predict. Our sole course is to strive to persevere.
