The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company Unilever stopped the introduction for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, announced how he will independently develop this new flavor within a personal series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Between Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement escalates the continuing conflict among the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur announced via an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism plus Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes plus Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, citing concerns that its independence was undermined following corporate moves to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that the company can actualise the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told journalists.
