The White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on an Lucrative $34 Million Agreement.

In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a two-year contract bringing in the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Added Benefits

The contract features a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside compensation of sixteen million for the 2026 season and $17M for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on award achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for earning the league MVP award.
  • $500K for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for finishing between fourth and tenth.
  • Another $250,000 for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

The agreement provides that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his consent and allows him to become a free agent at the conclusion of the contract. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Team Legacy

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization get a supplemental fee of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever player from Japan to represent the South Siders, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 soon, bolsters a emerging group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, surpassing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was limited to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with striking out 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing mostly at first, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.

International Pedigree

Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing two-base hit that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling 6-5 win. The next night in the title match against the United States, he hit a tying homer in the early innings, helping Japan's eventual title triumph.

The new White Sox addition is slated to be unveiled at a media availability on the coming Monday.
