Our team is verifying video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
